Where are all the miracles? Judges 6:1-13

Where are all the miracles?   Judges 6:1-13
A long time ago a man named Gideon asked a question that every believer in God needs to answer at some time.  The passage from the Bible noted above tells the story.
The nation of Israel had been overrun by the nation of Midian.  An angel appeared to Gideon, and in his greeting to him, he said that God was with Gideon.  Now Gideon didn’t know immediately that this was an angel, but no doubt he would have asked the same question anyway.  Actually he asked two questions, but I want to focus on one.  He combined the questions, so the one question by itself is: So if God is with us, then where are all His miracles?
The nation of Israel was fond of telling the stories of God’s great miracles of the past.  So Gideon figured God should be doing the same thing then too.
And Christians today are fond of telling the stories of God’s great miracles of the past, but they generally don’t think they should expect Him to do the same today.
But Gideon asked the question of the angel, and what do you know?  God used Gideon to do the very miracle that Gideon was concerned about.  And later in the Bible, Gideon was heralded in the Book of Hebrews as a great man of faith
Was it just coincidental that an angel appears to a man who questions where God’s miracles are and God then uses this man to be the instrument of that very miracle?  The Bible says that these things were written for our instruction (1Corinthians 10:11).  And what would the instruction be here but that God’s people should expect miracles from God?
And not just miracles for the sake of miracles.  The people needed help that only God could provide.
But go back to the first part of the question.  What prompted Gideon’s question was the statement from the angel that God was with him.
Now this expression ‘God with us’ by itself can mean different things.  For most Christians today, I believe they see the statement as one of location, answering the question, Where is God?  Yes, God is everywhere, but Christians believe that God has come to live within them as well.
But the expression can be understood in another way as well.  If someone promises to be with you, they mean that they can be counted on to support and help you, usually with a particular situation in mind.
In modern Western Christian usage, God’s presence is often spoken of but not His help, at least not in the sense of changing a situation but only in helping one to endure it.
At the end of this article, I have listed all the passages in the Bible relating to God being with someone.  It’s a lot of passages, but you only need to look at them if you are unsure whether saying God is with us means that He is just right there beside us or that He is there to help us in what we need.
Now Israel had been under the hand of Midian for seven years.  Yes, God took the initiative and came to Gideon.  But what Gideon did still required courage, and I would say the only courage that a person could have because they believed God was behind and with what they did.  God just didn’t appear to anybody, but somebody who expected that God should do something and the very thing that was needed.
For those of you who are Christians, you have to admit that the life of the Church depicted in the Bible is very far from the life of the Church that we see today.   You can say that God doesn’t do those things anymore, or you can say with Gideon. “If God is with us, then where are all His miracles?”
For those of you who do not identify yourselves as Christians, it is not hard to feel helpless in the face of the problems in the world and in our country.  I know a lot of people who just avoid reading about the news, because there is so little good news.  You know it would take a God to fix all the problems we have.
I am sure there are some people reading this who would understand this story as God just doing what He wants when He wants, and that it is entirely up to Him.  But frankly, I can’t imagine the Bible would have recorded this incident with Gideon’s question if God did not expect every generation to ask the same question and to see the same kind of answers.

God with us
Matthew 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.   Isaiah 7:14

When the Bible speaks of God being with someone, it is not a statement of God’s location or of his sympathy for that person.  It always speaks of His active care, protection, and help, as in, God is on my side.  Nothing can harm or defeat me.

Gen 21:20,22 And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. 21:22 And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God [is] with thee in all that thou doest:
Gen 26:3,24,28 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; 26:24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I [am] the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I [am] with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake. Gen 26:28 And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, [even] betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
Gen 28:15,20 And, behold, I [am] with thee, and will keep thee in all [places] whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done [that] which I have spoken to thee of. 28:20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
Gen 31:3 And the LORD said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.   See notes at Genesis 32:9
Gen 39:2,3,5,21,23 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 39:3 And his master saw that the LORD [was] with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand. 39:5 And it came to pass from the time [that] he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field. 39:21 But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 39:23 The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing [that was] under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and [that] which he did, the LORD made [it] to prosper.
Gen 46:4 I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up [again]: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.

The Lord Was with Him
February 19, 2010

"And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand." (Genesis 39:3)

Joseph deserves special recognition among the Patriarchs. His story encourages us, as he remained faithful in adversity and gracious in success. Yet we do disservice to the biblical message if we only see the circumstantial side of the story. The LORD was with him. It is always instructive to see how the rest of the Bible applies God's personal intervention in our lives. Please note the emphasis in these other key passages:

• Joshua (Joshua 6:27)--leadership fame
• Judah (the tribe in Judges 1:19)--military might
• Samuel (1 Samuel 3:19)--complete obedience
• David (1 Samuel 18:12)--God's favor
• Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:7)--leading a zealous revival
• Phineas (1 Chronicles 9:20)--wise leadership
• Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 17:3)--his faithfulness
• John the Baptist (Luke 1:66)--total commitment
• Scattered Jews (Acts 11:21)--their witness

Because God was with the various people, they were successful. Yet because they were obedient to God's use of them, God was with them.

The Lord Jesus promised the saints: "I am with you always even unto the end of the world" (Matthew 28:20). But that promise is given to us as encouragement to teach all nations "to observe, all things" as the Lord Jesus commanded us--because all power (authority) is His, and His alone. If we "abide" in Christ, we can ask whatever we want "and it shall be done unto you" (John 15:7). However, the absolute qualifier is the abiding. If we do not abide in Him, we cannot produce "fruit" (John 15:4). If we are "in the flesh," we "cannot please God" (Romans 8:8). God will be with us if, when, and as we are not "weary in we ll doing" (Galatians 6:9). HMM III
